A blood transfusion is a medical procedure in which donated blood or blood components are administered to a patient intravenously. It is commonly used to replace lost blood due to surgery, injury, or disease.
When is a Blood Transfusion Needed?
- Severe blood loss (trauma, surgery, childbirth)
- Anemia (low red blood cell count)
- Blood disorders (sickle cell disease, thalassemia)
- Cancer treatments (chemotherapy/radiation)
- Bleeding disorders (hemophilia)
- Organ transplant or major surgeries
Types of Blood Transfusions
- Whole Blood Transfusion– Rarely used; contains all blood components.
- Red Blood Cell (RBC) Transfusion– For anemia or blood loss.
- Platelet Transfusion– For low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia).
- Plasma Transfusion– For clotting disorders or severe burns.
- Cryoprecipitate– Contains clotting factors for bleeding disorders.
Blood Compatibility & Matching
- Blood types (A, B, AB, O) must be compatible to prevent reactions.
- Rh factor(positive or negative) must also match.
- Crossmatching ensures donor blood is safe for the recipient.
| Recipient | Can Receive From |
| A+ | A+, A-, O+, O- |
| A- | A-, O- |
| B+ | B+, B-, O+, O- |
| B- | B-, O- |
| AB+ | All types (universal recipient) |
| AB- | AB-, A-, B-, O- |
| O+ | O+, O- |
| O- | O- (universal donor) |
Risks & Complications
- Allergic reactions(rash, itching)
- Febrile reactions(fever, chills)
- Hemolytic reaction(immune system attacks donor blood) → Can be life-threatening.
- Infections(very rare due to screening; e.g., HIV, hepatitis)
- Fluid overload(TACO – Transfusion-Associated Circulatory Overload)
- TRALI(Transfusion-Related Acute Lung Injury)
Procedure
- Blood typing & crossmatch– Ensures compatibility.
- IV insertion– A needle is placed in the patient’s vein.
- Transfusion– Blood is given slowly (1–4 hours).
- Monitoring– Vital signs checked for reactions.
Alternatives to Blood Transfusion
- Iron supplements(for mild anemia)
- Erythropoietin (EPO)– Stimulates RBC production.
- Volume expanders(saline solutions for blood loss).
- Autologous transfusion(using patient’s own stored blood).
